About Root Canals

AKA Endodontic Treatments

Root canal procedure that is very famous for its bad connotation. Everybody has a story of some sort about their dreadful experience. But taking emotions and myths away it is just another dental procedure that could be done absolutely painless, just like a filling or a crown.

Root canal is necessary when the nerve tissue of the tooth is infected and dying or dead. If left untreated it will lead to an abscess. This process may manifest with pain that can be mild, moderate or severe, though I have seen patients that had had no symptoms at all.

What is involved in a root canal?

A root canal treatment involves removing the nerve of a tooth, cleaning and shaping the canal space and then filling it up to prevent bacteria from getting back into the root system.

The purpose of this is to allow a tooth, without a living nerve, to remain in the mouth without pain for function and for cosmetic reasons.

Another reason for the root canal could be a failure over a previously done root canal procedure. One of the common symptoms of the failing root canal is a small bump on the gum surface that sometimes discharges pus. Also the patient may experience symptoms such discomfort, swelling, etc. An alternative for the root canal treatment is complete tooth removal.
