About Gum Disease

AKA Periodontal Disease

It is estimated that 75% of American adults have some form of gum disease. Gum disease is often referred to as the “silent disease” because most patients experience no pain or obvious symptoms until advanced stages of the disease.

The primary cause of gum disease, also known as periodontitis, is plaque and tartar accumulation. Plaque is a soft, sticky film that builds up on your teeth and contains millions of bacteria. The bacteria in plaque creates a very unique body-”host” reaction and causes tooth decay and gum disease if it is not removed regularly through brushing and flossing.
If left untreated it creates inflammation if the soft tissue first, your gums and is called gingivitis.
